Helping Mughal Steel industries move forward
Helping Mughal Steel industries move forward
As part of its commitment to innovation and operational excellence, Pakistan’s Mughal Iron & Steel Industries Ltd recognises the importance of improving its scrap treatment processes and maximising recovery of secondary raw materials. To achieve these goals, Mughal sought a strategic partnership with Panizzolo Recycling Systems, specialised in designing and providing technologies for scrap treatment up to the End-of-Waste cycle.
Based in Lahore, Mughal Iron & Steel Industries Ltd is a leading steel company in Pakistan, offering a wide range of products to meet the needs of various industries. With a history of excellence spanning more than 50 years, it is dedicated to providing high-quality and durable steel products.
Global demand for steel is constantly increasing, fuelled by economic growth, ur- banisation and infrastructure needs. But at the same time, steel companies must address challenges such as production efficiency, cost control and environmental sustainability. To this end, steel companies are always seeking innovative solutions to optimise production processes, enhance product quality, reduce costs and meet growing market demands.
Global infeed
Mughal Steel’s choice of Panizzolo as a partner was driven by the latter’s solid reputation, high-quality technologies and customer-orientated approach. The partnership has proved instrumental in addressing operational challenges and capitalising on improvement opportunities, enabling the steel giant to gain a significant enhancement of scrap treatment processes, increased recovery of secondary raw materials and improved operational efficiency as a result of the innovative solutions and advanced technologies provided by Panizzolo.
As Mughal Steel sources raw materials from scrap from around the world, it was crucial to improve its processes to ensure optimal resource management. Among the planned
investments, Mughal Steel focused on the treatment of scrap from electric motors; it was of vital importance to introduce a dedicated grinding and separation plant to maximise metal recovery from these scraps and to enhance the overall process yield.
Made in Italy
Mughal Steel conducted extensive market research, with particular emphasis on two countries – Germany and Italy – which are known for their leadership role in recycling plants and for offering cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions.
In addition to Panizzolo’s solid reputation within the scrap industry, key reasons that led Mughal Steel to choose this Italian partner included its technologically-advanced solutions designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of scrap treatment processes.
Furthermore, Panizzolo’s solutions cover the entire treatment cycle from grinding to material separation, ensuring a continuous and controlled flow. The flexibility of the solutions on offer allowed Mughal Steel to adapt the processes to the specific needs and characteristics of the scrap electric motors to be treated, thereby maximising metal recovery and optimising overall yield.
Use of Panizzolo’s solutions enabled Mughal Steel to obtain secondary raw materials of an excellent quality, with a high content of valuable metals and low levels of contamination, thus permitting Mughal Steel to improve the quality of its steel products and ensure compliance with customer specifications.
Tested technologies
Panizzolo’s approach was based on the use of established and tested technologies that the company has developed and perfected over the years. The plant at Mughal Steel consists of five treatment islands, each performing a specific phase in the grinding, selection and refining of electric motors, transforming them from scrap into secondary raw materials. The various treatment phases have been incorporated within an 8 000 sq metre building.
Island 1: In this primary grinding phase, electric motors weighing up to 40 kg are broken up so as to carry out a preliminary separation of the metals, distinguishing ferrous from non-ferrous.
Island 2: The main objective of this phase is to prepare material for subsequent prerefining.
This secondary grinding process ensures that the material is reduced to the required size and characteristics for the next step, enabling optimal treatment. The materials are refined and separated from certain metal components that have completed the treatment cycle. A Panizzolo Mega 725 hammer mill is used to ensure efficient and precise grinding; equipped with a powerful 355 kW motor, this machine can handle up to 25 tonnes of material per hour.
Island 3: In the crucial pre-refining stage, the shredded scrap is prepared for subsequent stages of separation and refining using the Flex 800 hammer mill, which is known for its versatility. This stationary mill with an electrical power of 160 kW enables a production capacity of up to 8 tonnes per hour of ground outgoing material. The main objective of the pre-refining island is to separate any components that have completed the treatment cycle and to achieve an optimal particle size for the subsequent refining process.
Island 4: The dual plant line used for the refinement process is necessary to handle the high productivity from the previous stages. Each line consists of a pair of Panizzolo refining mills, offering numerous advantages in the treatment cycle through a specific design incorporating patented elements, special anti-wear castings and a high-quality structure that makes them extremely resistant to wear caused by steel and other abrasive materials.
During this phase, material is granulated and valuable metals – including copper, aluminium, brass and steel – are separated from inert components using sorting towers and specialised density tables. This sorting and separation process transforms the material from waste into high-quality secondary raw material, ready to be reintroduced into the production cycle.
Island 5: The final island comprises an optical separator designed to valorise and separate copper from other metals such as brass, achieving a copper purity of approximately 98%.
Construction and shipment
During the months of order preparation, Panizzolo and Mughal Steel maintained constant communication. While Panizzolo informed the customer about progress in preparing the machinery, Mughal Steel provided updates on the construction of the operating area. In addition, Panizzolo’s project manager made several trips to Mughal Steel to inspect the site, conduct technical surveys and discuss the progress of the project. This close collaboration helped ensure seamless integration of the plant.
The shipping phase, carefully managed by Panizzolo, ensured that the plant components arrived in perfect condition and according to the agreed schedule. The same attention to detail was also applied to the installation phase, which was divided into various steps owing to the plant’s significant scale in order to ensure a smooth operation and to minimise downtime for Mughal Steel.
Great results
The results achieved by Mughal Steel following the introduction of Panizzolo’s treatment plant have been exceptional. The company has experienced a significant increase in purchasing competitiveness and extended its reach internationally.
Through its ability to process scrap from electric motors sourced from around the world, Mughal Steel has expanded its purchasing power in nearly all major countries. This has made the company even more competitive in the global market, strengthening its leadership position within the industry.
Back to school at the Panizzolo Recycling Academy
Plant start-up and operator training were crucial phases in the overall success of the project.
Panizzolo organised a personalised training programme, focusing on operational, practical and maintenance aspects of the machinery. Through collaboration with the Panizzolo Recycling Academy, experienced technicians provided specific training courses, divided into themes and modules tailored to the needs of Mughal Steel’s operators. This approach ensured that they acquired the necessary skills to manage the plant effectively even from the early operational stages.

ECOMONDO 2022: The technological innovations presented by Panizzolo
ECOMONDO 2022: The technological innovations presented by Panizzolo
At Ecomondo 2022, Panizzolo Recycling Systems presented several technological innovations, enabling companies to maximise production, reduce operating costs and achieve full recovery of secondary raw materials.
At the end of a year full of trade fairs, Ecomondo in Rimini, Italy, never loses its appeal. For Panizzolo Recycling Systems, the trade fair event was a complete success. A great exhibition, companies from all over Europe and a concentration of entrepreneurs with a clear vision of the production and quality targets they want to achieve in the coming years. The metal recovery sector is, in fact, constantly evolving. On the one hand more and more complex scrap is generated, on the other hand the market demands the reintroduction of increasingly refined products into the production cycle.
In addition to this, we were able to welcome a steady stream of companies to our stand, who came especially to learn about our recycling solutions and the technological innovations we presented on 09 November and 10 November.
The presentation of the new “Mega – Series 7” Hammermills
During Ecomondo we presented a preview of the new Mega 735 and Mega 725 models, which make up the new range of hammermills called ‘Mega – Series 7’.
The design of the new mills followed the same philosophy that has always distinguished Panizzolo, completely renewing and replacing the old Mega range of hammermills. The technical department focused on defining the new mills in three essential aspects: increased productivity, processing flexibility and simplified maintenance operations. This has also been made possible by the constant communication between the technical department, internal R&D and end customers working with Panizzolo machinery.
WHAT SETS APART THE MEGA SERIES 7 HAMMERMILL
Among the technological innovations on display, the audience was pleasantly impressed by the following highlights:
1 – HOURLY PRODUCTIVITY
Compared to previous models, the new Mega 7 Series increases hourly productivity without changing energy consumption. In fact, the Mega 735 mill has a 450 kW motor and a production capacity of up to 35 t/h. In contrast, the Mega 725 model has a 355 kW motor and a production capacity of up to 25 t/h. Consequently, the new design has aligned the structural quality that has always distinguished Panizzolo machines.
2 – FIELDS OF APPLICATION
Special attention was given to the redesign of the components and the entire structure. In this way, the Series 7, compared to the market, can perform treatment on a greater range of heavy-duty scraps, many of which do not require pre-machining.
3 – CHECKS, CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
The installed upgrades further reduce machine downtime for checks, cleaning and periodic maintenance. The Mega Series 7 features the latest generation of casings, roofs, safety systems and a new range of accessories to make operators’ work easier and faster.
The new Mega Series 7 hammermill models always feature the patented interchangeable cradle, a historic Panizzolo patent and a key element in the grinding process, processing flexibility and maintaining structural quality over the long term.
The presentation of the new developments of the Panizzolo refining plant
Another important new feature presented in conjunction with Ecomondo are the technological innovations of the Panizzolo refining plant, consisting of the new refining islands and the new RAF 330 hammermill.
1 – MASTER PLANT AND REFINING ISLANDS
The design of specific treatment units independent of each other allows the recovery of metals from mixed and highly abrasive waste to be maximised at all times, adding the possibility of step-by-step processing. Specialised islands are also always characterised by their modularity and flexibility, allowing companies to keep the
2 – THE NEW RAF 330 REFINER HAMMERMILL
The refining plant has always been characterised by its patented hammermills. Designed directly by Panizzolo, they do not install generic blades but rather special cast hammers and armours, making them capable of processing waste with steel, glass, cement powders and other wearable aggregates. The grinding logic and patented elements also ensure longevity of the components, uniform wear, greater performance in volumetric reduction and constant quality of the output metals.
The new RAF 330 model presented to the public at Ecomondo takes up and updates many of these technological aspects, with an important innovation in hourly production. With an electrical output of 200 kW, the RAF 330 hammermill can process up to 3 t/h of waste.

CRL transforms and continues to grow with the new Panizzolo Recycling Systems plant.
CRL transforms and continues to grow with the new Panizzolo Recycling Systems plant
An active French company in the waste recovery sector, which boasts three treatment plants and considers the innovation of its processes as the pivotal point of its future. We interviewed Patrice Le Guern – owner of this family business – at the headquarters in the province of Bordeaux.
Good morning Patrice, can you tell us about your company?
CRL is a long-standing company in the waste recovery and recycling sector. It was founded in 1987 and subsequently – in 2001 – it was taken over by me and managed with the help of my brother and my son. From the acquisition to-date we have continued on an important path of growth that has led us to employ 25 people in three different sites – our headquarters in Saint-Emilion and two production plants in Countras and Toulouse – for an annual production of 40 tonnes.
We mainly process metal waste, such as scrap, sheet metal and ELV but also collection of copper, aluminium and stainless steel, which are then sold to refiners and foundries. In these processes, we have always invested in the modernisation and automation of activities. As part of this research, we first encountered Panizzolo through other companies and colleagues in the sector who already had some of your machines.
Why did you choose Panizzolo as a supplier?
After these first references, we wanted to visit the Panizzolo treatment plant in Piove di Sacco to personally evaluate its operations and tests. I must say that we were satisfied at the time and we are still satisfied with the plant that has been running for a few months.
The plant we purchased is a shredding line that allows us to optimise sorting and separate metals properly. These sorting activities were previously carried out visually and manually – therefore, slow and inconvenient – and did not allow for an effective subdivision of the treated materials. Now we can process our materials in all respects, treating ferrous metals above all adequately, and obtaining a selected, quality output product.
What are the technologies that make up the plant you installed?
The treatment plant we have chosen consists of a first step of volumetric reduction of the scrap with a shredder PZH 1500 R. Once the material has been processed, it is ready to be inserted into the grinding and selection cycle. This consists of a hammermill model Mega 1000 and various separation systems, such as eddy current, zig-zag and manual sorting cabins so as to separate ferrous, non-ferrous components and polluting aggregates, such as plastic, rubber, wood and even more.
What are the advantages of the plant and of this new way of working?
Certainly the transition from a manual to an automated process, which is really important to us. It allows us to save time and start processes in series and so we can define work days without hitches and machine downtime.
Among the advantages, the first aspect that we have all noticed is the silence: it does not produce any noise! The second aspect is the size: The hammermill is a very compact machine, which takes up little space, but it can optimally process significant amounts of scrap. The last aspect concerns the use: the personnel got used to it immediately because the operating logic and the management and control software are effective and simple.
What vision do you have for the future?
We plan to continue investing in the future. In this sense, we are already negotiating a second treatment line with Panizzolo Recycling Systems.
We do not want to limit our activity to the recovery of metal waste but we want to evolve towards a real transformation of the product and then, why not, set up a new metal treatment plant.

Making the best use of car body metals: the Pollini Group’s new recycling system
Making the best use of car body metals: the Pollini Group’s new recycling system
With more than 40 years of activity in the car dismantling industry, Pollini Group consists of 250 employees, a production area of about 45,000 square metres and as many as 6 locations in Northern Italy. Owned by the Pollini family for no less than three generations, the Group specialises in the recycling of end-of-life vehicles, maximising component recovery thanks to the best technologies available on the market.
Precisely with a view to enhancing its recycling activities, the Pollini Group recently installed and started up a new system dedicated to the treatment of car bodywork, choosing the Panizzolo Recycling Systems Mega 1100 series hammermill for ferrous metals and End-of-Waste reclamation. We talk more about this with Matteo and Giacomo Pollini, who tell us the story of their company, their vision for the future and why they decided to install this new recycling system.
Good morning Matteo and Giacomo, can you tell us the story of Pollini Group and how it carries out its ELV recycling business?
Matteo Pollini: Our companies were founded by Lorenzo Pollini, our grandfather, some 40 years ago. Later the management passed to our parents and then to us, the third generation of this family business. Today, Giacomo Pollini presides over Pollini Lorenzo e figli while I – Matteo – manage Pollini Srl. In total, we have about 250 employees in six locations: Bedizzole, Brescia Centre, Brescia Fornaci, Capriolo, San Martino d’Argine and – the latest acquisition – Busto Arsizio.
Pollini Srl deals with scrap disposal and recycling thanks to its dedicated scrap treatment plant. Of the input material, 80% comes from the waste produced by Pollini Lorenzo e figli and 20% from externally purchased material. In our processes we use machinery such as industrial loaders, presses, shears, pre-grinders and, last but not least, the newly installed and commissioned Panizzolo Mega 1100 series hammermill.
The processing steps are different depending on the type of vehicle: for all of them, the cycle starts with a selection of parts, after which the smaller vehicles are immediately pressed while the others are pre-ground and fed into the new hammermill. Our aim is to recycle and recover as much material as possible. Currently, the metal output we get from the various treatment plants we resell to other companies or directly to steel mills, depending of course on the grades we get.
Giacomo Pollini: Pollini Lorenzo e figli deals in car dismantling. We are authorised to dismantle petrol, diesel, LPG, natural gas and electric vehicles. We purchase incoming vehicles from dealerships and workshops, from depot tenders and companies such as FCA – from which we take back production rejects and prototypes – and from private customers. The inflow thus reaches around 20/25,000 vehicles per year. We have also recently expanded our pick-up service for buses of all sizes and lorries of all kinds.
The demolition process involves the reclamation, dismantling – an almost entirely manual process – and evaluation of individual parts. The rejects are sent to the grinding plants while the parts in good condition follow a meticulous process of quality control, registration and cataloguing, and are then stored in our warehouses. These in fact boast around 350,000 items catalogued and ready for resale, and are divided into manual picking areas and high-density vertical automated warehouses designed for quick access, space-saving and goods preservation.
Through our physical shops and e-commerce, we sell spare parts to workshops, body shops and private customers throughout Italy. In particular, e-commerce, the development of which had already been planned for several years, was quickly made operational at the beginning of 2021 to cope with the restrictions caused by COVID-19. The online market is growing steadily, now covering about 10 per cent of parts sales, yet the public and companies still prefer our physical shops (covering about 50 per cent) and telephone sales (covering the remaining 40 per cent).
You use very special auxiliary technologies in your machining processes. Can you describe them for us?
Matteo Pollini: Yes, that is true. Thanks to our in-house workshop, we make prototypes of technologies that can facilitate certain tasks. In the case of Pollini srl, we have designed and built a vice to position the material that allows us to rotate and move the vehicle at will; in this way we can more easily remove certain materials such as the windscreen, the bumpers and the engine.
Giacomo Pollini: At Pollini Lorenzo e figli, we have also used our workshop to create a new accessory tool: a rotating platform that allows the operator to dismantle one vehicle after another, minimising downtime due to moving and positioning cars, and increasing the safety of our workers within the production area.
Your last treatment step consists in grinding the bodywork. Why did you choose Panizzolo technology to best use this scrap?
Matteo Pollini: As already mentioned at the outset, almost all of the scrap processed by Pollini srl comes from what could not be recovered within the other company branch. Among these, the material par excellence is the bodywork of end-of-life vehicles, on which we perform the final treatment stages. Until a few years ago, after a volumetric reduction of the vehicle, we operated this process with a single-shaft shredder which, however, could not meet our recovery quality requirements.
Historically, the company has always been at the forefront of technological investments to keep us competitive in the market. This is why we decided to discontinue the old machinery, preferring to opt for a hammermill that would certainly allow us to obtain the quality of ferrous and metallic proler that we are looking for.
We had already known Panizzolo for several years, having been historical suppliers of scrap metal for its treatment plant, and in discussions with Fabrizio Scussolin – Panizzolo Recycling Systems’ sales manager for Italy – we had an excellent constructive discussion on which machine model could make the best use of our type of scrap from end-of-life vehicles. We therefore almost immediately turned to the Mega 1100 hammermill model for several reasons: the excellent price/performance ratio, the hourly productivity, the excellent energy consumption, and above all the ease and simplicity of maintenance. In addition to this, we really liked the possibility of having a flexible machine, thanks to its patented interchangeable cradle, allowing us in the near future to expand the range of scrap to be processed with this machine.
The Panizzolo Mega 1100 hammermill was supplemented with separation systems that we already had in house and from the previous system. We are currently finalising tests to refine the machine setting, but we can say that we are already getting good results.
What are your goals and what do you expect from the market?
Matteo Pollini: Pollini srl ‘s main objective is to refine its treatment cycles, with a view to optimising metal recovery and reclamation. In recent years, this vision has led to several certifications such as UNI EN ISO 9001, UNI EN ISO 14001 and UNI EN ISO 45001.
We will always try to implement and refine our capabilities and technologies, so that we are always in step with changes in the market and its quality requirements. With this in mind, the new Panizzolo Mega 1100 hammermill will be the plus that will also allow us to achieve these goals and close the circular economy within the Pollini Group.
Giacomo Pollini: The scrapping sector has always been very volatile and tied to the production market, a fact that will most likely not change in the near future either. What will change, however, will be the processing methods in line with new technologies in our industry and the advent of electric vehicles. Even though we only handle about ten a month at the moment and they are mostly prototypes, we need to structure ourselves quickly to ensure the handling of this new type of waste. Electric vehicle recovery will be the challenge of the next decade and Pollini Lorenzo e figli is already starting to move in this direction, with the same professionalism and seriousness that has distinguished it for more than 40 years.
